I never thought I would be writing a blog post with this title. I never thought bloggers actually got invited to White House events just because they were bloggers but it happened to me.
A few weeks ago I got an email from the Blogher network asking me if I would be interested in going to an event to the White House. I said yes, of course, but it sounded like a long shot. I didn’t give it much thought and almost forgot about it until the day I opened an email that said: “First Lady Michelle Obama invites you to a conversation about the health of our nation’s kids to be held at the White House.” I couldn’t believe it!
I’m very passionate about our kids’ health and living a healthy lifestyle as a family so I was very excited not only to be invited to the White House but that this would be an event about a matter that’s very important to me.
My excitement sort of wore off when I realized I might not be able to go because I have an exclusively breastfed baby and this was a ‘no kids’ event. I know a lot of people would say just to leave the baby home but she doesn’t take a bottle and the stress of being gone for half day and not knowing if she would eat wouldn’t have let me enjoy this event. A friend suggested I ask if I can bring her with me. I was sure my request would be denied but I had nothing to lose. To my surprise the White House agreed to let me bring my baby. I was beyond thrilled to find out how supportive they are of nursing moms. It makes me so proud to live in a country where the government understands the importance of breastfeeding.
This event will be about the First Lady’s Let’s move program. It will consist of remarks by Mrs. Obama and Debra Eschmeyer, Executive Director of Let’s Move! and Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition, along with other Administration officials.
If you don’t know much about Let’s Move I encourage you to visit their website. In a nutshell:
Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Sure, this is an ambitious goal. But with your help, we can do it.
If weather permits, we will also be visiting the White House Kitchen Garden.
The First Lady’s remarks will be live streamed here. I will be sharing on my social media channels videos, pictures and comments during my visit so join me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram this Tuesday, March 15th, 2016 from 9:30am-12:30am ET. You will also be able to find posts from me and other bloggers that have been invited by searching #LetsMove on social media channels.
I’ll also be sharing more about it in my blog a few days after the visit so feel free to check back.
I feel so honored to be invited to the White House, to be able to be in the same room with the First Lady and to share with others my passion to raising a healthier generation. I hope this encourages you to follow your dreams and what you’re passionate about!
