Every morning my husband get up a bit earlier and prepares a smoothie for us. Not only is it tasty but it has so many good nutrients – it’s a great way to start our day. The best part is that our toddler loves it and will drink about 3-4 ounces as soon as we make it and another 3 during the rest of the morning. My daughter is not one to eat a lot so it puts my mind at ease when she drinks the smoothie because I know she had a good dose of veggies, fruits and healthy fats.
We use a blender because we want to consume every part of the greens and fruits. This way our blood sugar doesn’t spike since it has to digest all of its nutrients and it fills us up.
Morning Smoothie Recipe:
This makes enough for 4-5 people.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of organic greens: We buy the power green from Costco, it contains: spinach, kale and chard. If we don’t have this available we’ll use any leafy greens we have.
- 1 cup of organic frozen berries: we also buy these from Costco, the bag comes with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and cranberries.
- 1 stick of organic celery: we don’t always have celery
- 3 organic carrots
- 1 banana or 1 kiwi
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (or another healthy fat like half of an avocado)
- 1 tablespoon of almond butter: this gives it a great flavor
- 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
- 4 tablespoons of grass-fed yogurt: we don’t always have this so we don’t add it every time
- 1 cup of water, coconut water or water kefir
Put everything in your blender and blend until smooth. That’s it!
If you don’t feel like getting up early to prepare this you can leave it all in the blender, inside the fridge, the night before. Also, if you have veggies or fruits that are about to go bad, just freeze them and add them to your smoothie later on.
The good thing about the smoothie is that you can try different leafy greens, veggies and fruits until you end up with something you like, change them when you get bored and use what’s in season. A good rule to keep in mind is that you want to have:
-
- 2 cups of greens
- 1 cup of fruit
- healthy fat
- liquid
We usually have more than this, but this is the minimum you should add to your smoothie. Experiment and try different things, you’ll be surprised!
