A few weeks ago I was invited to attend an XFINITY event with other bloggers (#XFINITYmoms). I wasn’t sure what to expect nor if what I would learn would be a right fit for my blog but I love technology and I really wanted to see what is new now-a-days. Let me tell you, what I learned blew my mind.
I learned about XFINITY home and XFINITY TV with X1 and I love how these technologies seem to be build around what families and parents need. I feel that once they become more popular they will change the way we use technology in our homes and they will help us create a safer environment for our kids.
At the end of the event, I was given a free tablet and gift bag in exchange for an honest review of what I learned. What you’re about to read is 100% my personal opinion and the features that I love and will work in our family life.
As soon as I got home I told my husband that we will be getting this system, if not now we definitively need it once my oldest is going to school because I will know if she’s home or not at the right time and I can monitor what’s going on. We’ve actually never hired a sitter because I worry about leaving my kids with someone I don’t know but with XFINITY home you can see what is happening inside your home via an app. That right there is worth to me every penny!
XFINITY home is more than just that… It’s a home security system that is customizable to your needs. You can add cameras, motion sensors, outlet controllers, door/window sensors and smoke and water detection alerts. You can utilize all these functions and arm and disarm your alarm system remotely, using an app. For me the best feature of it all is that it’s customizable to your want and needs.
You can use an app to set rules, for example: let’s say your kids get back from school at 3:30pm, you can set an alarm to get a text message if the front door isn’t opened between 3-4pm or you can set up an alarm to get notified anytime the door is opened. Maybe you have window that you’re worried someone can break into or that your teenager can escape through, well you can put a sensor and get notified when that window is opened. You will know if it’s opened late at night or when no one is home that there’s probably something suspicious going on.
I also love the outlet (light) controller for those days when we’re out late because within the app you can turn on and off lights, you can set up the times they go on and off, or you can set up the lights to turn on at sundown. If you have several of these lamps you can program them to turn on during different time frames and make it seem like someone is home!
XFINITY home works with third party apps/services, like August, Chamberlain, Lutron and Nest (they will keep adding more and more services so check here for the latest info). Within the XFINITY app you can control all of these other services. My favorite was August: Let’s say you’re away and you want your neighbor to bring in your mail. He rings the door bell, you can see through the XFINITY camera that it’s really him, you use the August system to open the door, he walks in, you can see he sets the mails in the living room (and doesn’t go anywhere else around house), leaves the house and you lock the door – all within the app! How amazing is that?
XFINITY home live feed: this is another one of my favorite features. You can set up all the cameras you want and see in real time what’s going on inside your home – all within the app. They also record what happens, 24/7, and an archive of these videos is kept for 10 days. You’re the only person with access to this so you don’t have to worry about anyone else seeing them.

XFINITY TV with X1:
I have to be honest, we don’t have cable. Well we do but we never use it. We mostly watch Netflix and Hulu and buy movies for our kids when we travel. Before going to this event I didn’t even know about X1 nor saw the point of looking into other cable. However, X1 has some features that blew me away. I am now talking to my husband about getting this in our home.
The first thing I learned was that you can talk to the remote! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to click all the buttons in our remote just to get to one section, and sometimes I can’t even find it. With this remote you can just say what want to access. You can even say the show you want to watch, the name of an actor or even a movie quote and it will pull up the info on the screen. That right there is so useful because with 2 small kids I don’t have time to look for stuff.
However, there are 3 features that I loved the most: Kids Zone, recording shows that you can download and the live feed.
Kids Zone: This is a section only for kids and once kids are in it they can’t go back to the adult section unless you do it for them. The best part is that you can restrict the content that appears in Kid Zone, so in my case I would only allowed shows that my 3 year old can watch. But let’s say a show comes up that I know nothing about? Well the Common Sense media rating and reviews is right there so I could find out if this is a show appropriate from my kid.
Recording shows (DVR) that you can download: We travel a lot, which means I spent quite a bit of money buying movies and shows that my kids can watch on the airplane. The last thing I want is a fussy kid during a flight and having the option to watch shows is great. With XFINITY X1 I can record her favorite shows and then download them for free to the app, so we can watch them during the flight without the need of wifi access. That right there would save me money and I love it – especially because I always get new movies/series for each flight.
Live feed: This was by far my favorite option.
Picture this: your kid is at their first dance recital. the grandparents would love to be there but they live far away. Now they don’t have to miss it, you can live stream the entire recital using the XFINITY app on your phone and it will show up on their TV. The grandparents don’t need to know how to set it up, they will get a pop-up on their TV saying you want to share a live stream, all they have to do is click one button to accept. As someone that doesn’t have her parents near by, I was touched by this and thought of all those times I wanted my parents to see our kids and they missed it.

After learning about these awesome features we got delicious snacks and I got to mingle with other local bloggers, which is always a treat because as a mom I don’t get many night outs. We even got cupcakes and the staff was so nice.
I was very happy with what I learned during this event because I wasn’t expecting to learn about something that I would find so useful for our family. I think this is just the beginning of emerging technology that will make our lives easier and that is pretty exciting. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and wished all those things I saw on the The Jetsons’ cartoon where real…well, now they are.
So what do you think about all of this? Are you as excited as I am?
