This DIY Body Butter Recipe will have your skin feeling smooth in no time at all! Perfect for dry skin and one of the easiest beauty products to make at home, too. This homemade whipped body butter is truly one of my favorites to make for myself or give as a Christmas gift, too.
Body is lotion is one the few things I’ve used every day since I was 15 but it wasn’t until last year that I realized how important is to have a natural, non-toxic body lotion. Your skin is very absorbent and covers your entire body. Whatever you put in it will go right into your body, so you want to make sure it’s something free of toxins. I wish I realized this sooner because I’ve been putting junk on my body for over 15 years.

When I became aware of the importance of using organic and non-toxic products I wasn’t confident enough to make my own, nor had the time, so I turned to the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database by the Environmental Working Group. If you don’t want to make your own lotion, use their guide to buy a non-toxic one or try this one which is what I use as a morning lotion since it absorbs very quickly.
If you’re ready to start making your own body butter then you’re going to love this recipe! It takes about 5 minutes to make and leaves your skin feeling so soft and smooth. Ever since I started using this I’ve noticed a big improvement on my skin. I’ve also made several batches for friends and family and they all love it.
Best part, you don’t have to worry about this lotion melting in the summer or getting too hard in the winter thanks to the beeswax. It is also very affordable and the ingredients you buy for this lotion will last for while so you’ll have enough for many batches. You can also use these ingredients in some of my other DIY recipes.
Keep in mind that this is a body butter, which means it’s thick and oily. You only need to use very little at a time. If you end up all oily and it doesn’t absorb rather quickly, then you’re putting on too much body butter. All you need is a very thin layer and the best time to put this on is right before you go to bed so your skin can use all these amazing ingredients to heal itself.
This is also a great lotion to use if you’re getting a massage!
How can I make this body butter “whipped” more?
The easiest way is to use a hand mixer to whip. It really gets that fluff going and gives it that whipped texture as well.
What is the shelf life of homemade body butter?
This can really vary depending on the outdoor temp as well. But a good rule of thumb is that it should last for a couple of months without issue. If you keep it at room temperature, just be aware that if your house gets hot there’s a chance that it might liquify a bit as well.

DIY {organic} Body Butter
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Organic Almond Oil
- 1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil
- 1/4 cup Beeswax Organic Pastilles
- 1 teaspoon of Organic Vitamin E Oil
- 4 tablespoons of raw organic: Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter or Mango Butter
- Essential oils (optional) – When I make the lotion for myself I rarely use essential oils but when I make it for my friends I like using Lavender Essential Oils & Vanilla or Grapefruit & Vanilla. I usually add 10-15 drops of each and smell it to make sure it’s just right.
- Glass jar to store it: This Ikea 17 oz glass jar fits perfectly one batch of the lotion
Directions to make this whipped body butter recipe:
You will have to make this lotion in a double boiler, which means you have to put water in a pot and inside that pot you need to put a glass jar where you’ll make the lotion. I have a specific glass jar I use to make this every time, nothing fancy, it’s just an empty olives jar.
Use low/medium heat to get the water inside the pot hot. Once the water is close to boiling, put inside the glass jar with the beeswax and butter. Once it starts melting add the coconut oil and olive or almond oil. You’ll want to stir the ingredients occasionally so they mix well.
Once all the ingredients have melted, add the vitamin E oil and essential oils. Mix it all one last time.
Transfer to the glass jar where you plan to store this lotion and wait for it to harden.
That’s it! Wasn’t that easy? It’s seriously so easy to make and you will love how your skin feels after using it. Plus you know exactly what’s in the lotion so you don’t have to worry about toxic chemicals in your skin.
A couple of tips:
If you want to make this lotion more “fluffy” you can mix it with a hand mixer for a few minutes and then transfer it to the jar where you plan to store it.
If you’re making this as a gift, decorate the glass jars.
Your friends are going to love you!

This sounds amazing … I want some! 🙂 One question – I bought a tub of organic coconut oil to try to recreate some of your recipes, but the oil is in completely solid form, like wax, so I don’t know how I would even go about measuring 1/4 cup. How do you manage? Thanks!
Carolina says
Savannah coconut oil melts at 76F so it’s normal for the oil to be solid if your home is cooler.
If the oil is a bit mushy I just put it in a measuring cup and press it down. If it’s too hard I scoop a bit of it and put it in the microwave like 10-20 seconds. I repeat this until I have the amount I need.

I want to try this! I’ve been using coconut oil as my lotion for the last year now but it doesn’t give my skin enough moisture. Question – do you think this lotion could be used as a facial moisturizer too?
Carolina says
I tried doing coconut oil but I didn’t like being that oily for so long. This lotion goes a long way so if you rub a little on your skin it will be quickly absorbed – less messy than coconut oil. And yes it can be used as a facial moisturizer and even as a diaper rash lotion. 🙂 Basically, you can use it anywhere on your body because these ingredients are great for your skin.
