In my home we are obsessed with play mats. Play mats are so great for kids, from babies to well beyond the baby years. They’re a great surface to play on and once they get older they can practice their walking skills, tumbling skills, jumping skills or just hang out on the play mat.
When I had my first child I was determined to find a non-toxic play mat for her. You see most babies and toddlers spent a great amount of their time on a play mat and most of them where made with questionable materials, like PVC, Eva Foam, and so on. Finding a non-toxic mat became a priority to me and that’s why I wrote my popular non-toxic play mats post.

It’s been well over 3 years since I wrote this post and I’ve come across many mats since them. I am so happy to see that other parents that were as worried as I was about toxic play mats created new non-toxic play mats! Not too long ago I came across CreamHaus and the owner was kind enough to send us several of their play mats to review.
The first one we received was the Folding Play Mat and I fell in love with it from the moment we got it. However, I decided we had to test it out for a while before I wrote a review because the daily excessive use the mats get in my home are a deciding factor on wether it’s keeper or not.
Now onto the details…
Who is CreamHaus and are they truly non-toxic?
CreamHaus is a company that was started because a father was worried about the toxicity level on the common play mats and he set out to create a truly non-toxic play mat. When it comes to baby products it is hard to know if something is truly non-toxic since most companies test their product to be in compliance of certain laws. This means some products contain small amount toxins but they pass the test because the levels are lower than what’s required by law.
However, CreamHaus went beyond this type of testing and tested their products to make sure there weren’t any toxins at all. All their play mats are free of PVC, BPA, EVA, TPE, Formamide, Flame-Retardants, Phthalates, Lead. In addition, CreamHaus Play Mats are free of following volatile organic compounds: Formaldehyde, Toluene, Formamide, N-dimethyformamide, 2-Ethylhexoic Acid, Butyl hydroxy toluene, 2-Methoxyethanol.
Not only are they truly non-toxic but they are very transparent about it, which is a big plus for me. You can find the toxicity reports confirming all of this on their site. Just click on the product you’re interested in and under the “materials” tab you will find the downloadable reports.
CreamHaus explained a little bit more about their manufacturing process and shared with me the following:
CreamHaus play mats are made with food-grade recyclable polyethylene (PE) foam with premium polyurethane (PU) leather cover. We eliminate any use of chemicals during our manufacturing process to make our products truly non-toxic and eco-friendly. Often times, many baby product manufacturers would pass (sometimes barely) the required test score and still claim their products as “non-toxic”. For this reason, most brands don’t publicly make their test reports available to everyone. If you look at our test reports, you will notice that we don’t just pass the testing but no chemicals are even detected from our products.
The foam material of the play mat is made from food-grade, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) foam. There are 10 thin layers of non-cross linked PE foam sheets which are laminated through a chemical-free adhesive method to achieve the optimal thickness. LDPE is widely regarded as one of the safest plastics available. It has a simple molecular structure and does not contain phthalates or other unsafe additives. It is used in many crib mattress covers for its waterproof and non-toxic qualities.
Folding Play Mat review
Now that you know this is a truly non-toxic play mat I want to share with you why I fell in love with the Folding Play Mat.
For a long time I’ve wanted a play mat that was non-toxic, very thick, large and waterproof. I didn’t think it was possible to find exactly what I was looking for so I was very surprised when I received the Folding Play Mat and realized it had all those qualities I’ve dreamt of having in a play mat.
Here’s what I love about the mat:
It is truly non-toxic:
I’ve already mentioned this but when deciding if a play mat is safe for my kids to use, this is a high priority. This is a play mat I can use and a company I really trust.
My girls are very active and my youngest one is fearless, this also means she falls a lot. The Folding Play Mat is so thick that my little one doesn’t cry when she falls on this mat. It is actually the thickest mat I’ve ever seen so it’s now become a permanent item in our living room.
This is a big deal for me! I love all the other mats I tried but cleaning them was not easy. Most of them have a cover that needs to be washed and I just don’t have time for that. The Folding Play Mat is ideal because you can wipe it clean.
My one year old decided to test it by rubbing chocolate all over it. Her sister gave her some while I was doing dishes and I came to find a mat that was pretty much all brown. After taking a deep breath I grabbed a wipe and the chocolate just came right off. No washing, no drying, no waiting. Wipe it clean and the kids can keep playing.
It even surprised my mom who was worried that our mat was white and pink. She was convinced it would get stained but after spilling all sorts of things on it, we have come to realize this mat doesn’t get stains. It is amazing.
The Folding Play Mat is big and I love it. As much as smaller play mats are cute they’re sometimes not useful. You need to put a kid or two on it plus toys, having a bigger play mat is the way to go.
This play mat comes in 2 sizes: 51in x 79in and 51in x 102in. After trying many different play mats I think it’s worth to get the largest one because this play mat will be used by your kids even when they’re older and you will want that extra cushioned space.
This Folding Play Mat is so nicely made, from stitching to materials it feels very high end and it’s great quality. Just by touching it you can tell this play mat is build to last. Which is a very important factor considering the price is the on the higher end.
It’s lightweight and it folds up:
Having a lightweight play mat is a must for me because I like to pick it up one handed when I’m cleaning. This mat is really light, it just 9.3lbs and it folds us easily. This is great because if we need to put the mat aside because we’re having guests over it is very easy to do that. Plus it stands on it’s own so I leave it in a corner of our leaving room.
It’s perfect as a gym mat:
A long time ago one of my readers had asked me about a gym mat, one where her toddler could tumble and not get hurt. At the time I couldn’t recommend her anything but now I can. This mat is perfect for very active kids trying out their skills. My 4 year old has been practicing her tumbles and funny jumps on this mat. She hasn’t gotten hurt because the mat is thick and cushions her fall.
Does it have any cons?
I like to always write the plus and cons of the mats I review but in all honesty I can’t find any cons. The price might be a con for some since it’s on the higher end but I think the price reflects the quality and the fact that it’s truly a non-toxic play mat.
The Folding Play Mat by CreamHaus is worth the price. It is the best play mat I have tested and one of the most versatile ones. Plus the easiness to clean and move around is huge plus for me and one of the reasons it is at the top of my list.
I love the fact that the owners are so transparent about the materials and testing they’ve done. When a company freely posts their toxicity reports on their site you know they have nothing to hide and I personally love supporting companies like this.
Our kids’ health is so important and most kids spend so much time on play mats that a truly non-toxic one is a must. This mat is just great and if I had to chose one mat I would get this one.
CreamHaus was kind enough to offer all Mama instincts readers a special code to save 10% on any of their products. Use code: MAMAINSTINCTS10 when checking out. You can get the Folding Play Mat here.
Have you gotten this mat? Do you love it too? I want to hear all about it. Leave a comment below.
Disclaimer: I don’t work for the company mentioned in this post. I did request a sample of this product but what’s written here is 100% my personal opinion.
