The garbage disposal in my home gets very stinky sometimes. It seems that some of the food gets stuck causing my sink to smell and let me tell you, it is not nice having to do the dishes when it smells bad. I have seen some products that remove the odor but they are made with questionable ingredients so I knew I had to come up with a natural alternative.
I tried putting lemon peals for a while and that worked well but eventually I came up with this recipe that works even better. The base of this recipe is orange peels so we usually make it after someone at home has eaten oranges. A big plus is that we can use this peel instead of just throwing it out.
This garbage disposal cleaner is so easy to make that you can have it ready in less than 5 minutes. If you find yourself using it a lot, you can make several batches of it so you can have it handy whenever you need it. When I’m making extra batches I just store them in the fridge until I need to use them.
The recipe is not only great for removing the smell but it also cleans everything out and it’s non-toxic, natural and kid-safe. I’ve even had my 3 year old help me make it in some ocassions.
We usually use the garbage disposal cleaner about once a month or when our sink starts smelling. We also use it if the dishes were pilled up for a couple of days (which unfortunately happens in my home) to avoid any smells and clogs.
Natural Garbage Disposal Cleaner Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- Orange peels (from 2 medium oranges)
- 8 drops of Lemon essential oil
- 8 oz Mason jar (or any other glass jar to store)
Directions:
Add 3/4 cup of white vinegar to the mason jar.
Add in 4-8 drops of Lemon Essential Oil to the vinegar and mix it up. Then add the orange peel.
You want to fill up the jar with orange peels. If the liquid doesn’t reach all the way to the top, you can add a little extra vinegar.
Screw the lid back on and let sit for 24 hours.
The next day pour the contents of your jar into your garbage disposal. While you’re doing that, run your garbage disposal with warm water (avoid hot water with your garbage disposal as it can cause clogs).
Once the grinding is complete, turn off your disposal and let the water run for at least 15 seconds to flush out any remaining particles.
Optional: rinse with a mixture of 2 tbsp baking soda mixed in 1 cup warm water. This is not necessary but will do some additional scrubbing if needed.
There you have it – a nice and clean garbage disposal that it’s not stinky!
