The New Year always inspires me to set new goals and get more organized. Having two small kids means my day goes by very fast and if I don’t plan ahead I end up tired and with very little accomplished.
It also makes it harder to get organized when only I know what the kids are doing so I decided it was time to create a weekly calendar of our family’s schedule. This way my husband would have an overall idea of what we’re doing and I would be able to organize myself better. I love the idea of using my phone calendar to keep us organized, the problem is I forget to check it and have missed stuff. This is why something I can print every week and put it in a visible spot works great for me.
I love colors and for this weekly calendar to work I knew I would need colorful pens. It is so much easier to read a calendar when the activities are color coded. I headed off to Target and found Pilot G2 Metallic pens, which I knew would be perfect for this project.
You can get a set of Pilot G2 pens according to your needs and preferences – they come in four point sizes and 15 vibrant colors: G2 Premium, G2 Target Fashion Collection and G2 Metallics. You can pretty much color code every single activity with these options!
How to plan your family’s weekly schedule effectively:
Print out my free weekly calendar
Just click here to download the calendar and print it. I usually print one every weekend and it takes me about 10 minutes to fill out but you can print several copies at once if you want to plan out your month.
Hack: if you’re printing several copies and setting up a month at a time, tape each calendar on top of each other. When the week is over just rip the top one off and the following week will be visible.
Use the left column to write down your kids names
You can also write your partner’s name or whoever else you want to include in your weekly activities. In my case I’ve found it easier to just put all our family members on the calendar because it makes it easier for me to get an overview of our week.
Write the activity corresponding to each day of the week
This is the easy part. All you have to do is write down the activities you have planned for the week. You can be as general or as specific as you’d like. For example, if we have a doctor’s appointment I write down the time but if it’s just a school day for my preschooler I just write “school” since I already know the hours she’s there.
You can also just use the last row exclusively for family activities, like this:
At the bottom I left a space for notes in case you need to get something important done during that week.
Color code your activities for easy reading
This is my favorite part and what makes things easier for me!
I sat down and made a list of our most common activities and then chose a color for each one. I have a slight obsession with color pens! I’ve actually been using the Pilot G2 pens for years now because I like how smooth they write and that they’re comfortable to hold – we own them in different colors but also blue and black.
I keep a little note by my desk to make sure I use the same color coding each week. You have to figure out what makes sense for your family, but in my case I decided this is how I will use the Pilot G2 Metallics colors:
- Pink: Classes for the girls and play dates
- Blue: Doctor’s appointment (or other important appointments)
- Green: Family activities
- Mustard: My husband’s activities that we should be aware of
- Purple: Special occasions / events
If you need to use more colors, you should get the G2 Target Fashion Collection instead since it comes with 12 different colors. The Pilot G2 pens are the #1 selling gel ink brand in America for a reason!
That’s it! Pretty simple, right? Once you get on a roll you’ll remember the colors and just taking a quick glance at the calendar you’ll know what your week looks like. No more missing phone notifications or forgetting appointments!
