There’s nothing like winter to dry your skin. Once it gets cold and indoor heating comes on, my skin starts showing signs of dryness. The worst of part are always my hands.
Can you relate?
This happens because during winter time humidity levels drop and your skin loses more than 25 percent of its ability to hold moisture. The air outside is cold and dry, which means the water in your skin evaporates more quickly. This is why your skin looks flaky and feels dry and tight. It also seems that as you get older, the dryer your skin gets.
This is why it’s so important to keep your skin hydrated and nourished with body butter or lotions. Part of my nighttime routine is putting this body butter all over my body. It does a great job at keeping my skin nourished but once a day is not enough for keeping my hands moisturized, especially in the winter time.
This when I started experimenting with body butters and trying different containers so I could easily carry a hand lotion in my purse and re-apply the butter as needed throughout the day. I finally found the perfect container, it looks like a small deodorant container and it’s very light. It’s just perfect to carry with you anywhere you go.
Plus these hand lotion sticks are made with organic and non-toxic ingredients, which makes them safe to use on the little ones. You can also use them as your lip balm!

I love making a big batch of these during the winter months and giving them as gifts. People really love it because it’s homemade, useful. portable and really nourishing for the skin.
Keep in mind that this is technically not a lotion since it doesn’t contain water – this is also what makes it last 6 months without the need of preservatives. However, if you’re looking for a hand lotion, this is our favorite one.
DIY Hand Lotion Sticks
Ingredients:
- Lotion stick container
- 3/4 cup mango butter or cocoa butter
- 1/2 cup beeswax pellets
- 1/4 cup coconut oil*
- 1/4 cup grapeseed oil*
- Optional: 6 drops of Roman Chamomile essential oil or lavender essential oil
*If you don’t have these oils you can substitute for other nourishing oils like olive oil, jojoba, safflower, etc. You will need a total of 1/2 cup of a nourishing oil.
A note about beeswax: if you’re making this during the summer, you can add more beeswax pastille so the sticks don’t melt if you leave them in a hot place. You can add anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon.
Directions:
To make the lotion sticks you will need to melt the ingredients first. You can do this by using your microwave and melting them in 30 second intervals (don’t forget to mix the ingredients with a spoon every 30 seconds) or if you can melt them using the double boiler method (this is the way we make them).
In a small glass jar add the beeswax pastilles and the cocoa or mango butter. Place the jar inside of a small pot with water. Keep the pot under medium-low heat.
Once the ingredients are almost melted add your nourishing oils (coconut oil and grapeseed oil). Mix your ingredients occasionally until everything has melted.
While you’re wanting for your ingredients to melt, set up the lotion stick containers in your counter, on a place where they can be left untouched for 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat and add the essential oils, if you’re using any. Mix well one last time.
I transfer the mixture to a glass measuring cup so it’s easier to pour but if you’re careful you can pour it from the same glass container – just make sure you grab it with a towel so you don’t burn yourself.
Fill the containers with the mixture all the way to the top. Let them harden – it will take about 10 minutes before you can put the lid back on and about 20-30 minutes before they’re ready to be used.
Once ready, just rub them on your hands just like you rub your deodorant bar on your armpits. Rub your hand with the stick on both sides and then rub your hands together to make sure the lotion butter is all over your hands.
The containers are reusable so once you’re done with your lotion stick make sure you save the container for your next batch.
Pretty simple, right?
Hope you love these as much as we do!
