Close your eyes and image fresh mashed potatoes on your plate… Can you almost smell it? Does your mouth water as much as mine does? I absolutely love mashes potatoes. It is one of my favorite side dishes and it goes so well with most of the recipes I make.
One of my favorite meals is chicken or steak with a side of veggies and mashes potatoes. Mmmm! I love making tasty mashed potatoes, you know, the kind that doesn’t require gravy because they taste so good on their own.
Over the years I’ve perfected my recipe but there was one BIG problem. Potatoes take a long time to cook! I can’t tell you how many times I forgot I was cooking them and I would end up with a pot of burned potatoes. It happened so many times since I became a mom that I gave up on mashed potatoes.
That is, until the Instant Pot came into my life.
Believe it or not, I had my Instant Pot for over a year before I realized I could make mashed potatoes. I gave it a go and I was impressed, not only did my potatoes cook in record time, it was the best mashed potatoes I had ever made – confirmed by my husband and picky kids.
Now I can make amazing mashed potatoes in less than 10 minutes. It takes about 2 minutes to peel the potatoes, 3 minutes to cook them, a few more minutes to wait for the Instant Pot to depressurize and about 2 minutes to prep them.
Ever since I discovered I can make mashed potatoes this way, I make them quite often. They’re just so good! But the best part is that if I forgot I’m cooking them, that’s okay because they won’t burn in the Instant Pot.

I am so excited to share this recipe with you because I am sure your friends and family are going to love it as much as we do!
3 Minute Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes
This recipe serves a family of 4 with big size portions. If you need to make a bigger batch just adjust the cooking time by adding a few extra minutes.
Ingredients:
- 3 large organic potatoes
- 1 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon of Himalayan salt
- 3 tablespoons of high quality butter like Kerrygold (you can get it in bulk at Costco)
- 1/2 cup of organic whole milk
- Himalayan salt to taste
Directions:
3 Minute Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes
One of everyone's favorite comfort food, ready in just a few minutes! Perfect for large groups too.
Ingredients
To cook potatoes:
- 3 large organic potatoes
- 1 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon of Himalayan salt
To make the mashed potatoes:
- 3 tablespoons of high quality butter, like Kerrygold or Organic Valley
- 1/2 cup of organic whole milk
- Himalayan salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash and peel potatoes.
- Dice the potatoes to make sure they cook fast – that’s the key to having them ready in 3 minutes.
- Put the diced potatoes in the Instant Pot and add 1 cup of water. The water should just cover the potatoes.
- Add salt and stir.
- Close the lid and cook for 3 minutes. You’ll have to click on manual and set the time to 3.
- Once it’s done, wait a few minutes before opening the lid to make sure it’s naturally depressurized. However, if you're in a hurry you can do a quick release.
- Drain the water from the Instant Pot before making the mashed potatoes. Tip: make the mashed potatoes in the Instant Pot so you have less dishes to wash afterwards.
- Add the butter and start mashing the potatoes. You can mash them with a fork or a masher but I’ve found that using a hand mixer is the fastest way to get them done.
- Once they’re almost all mashed, add the milk and salt. Taste a few times while adding the salt to make sure they taste right to you.
- Keep mashing them until they have the texture you like.
- Serve just plain or garnish with a little bit of parsley and/or parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

Hi….I saw your post and had a question. I mash my potatoes with a hand mixer, I just got an Instant Pot and was wondering if using a hand mixer (I have the one with the two beaters) if this would scratch the inside of the Stainless Steel Pot and if it did would it still function properly? Thanks for this post!

I use the beaters inside the instant pot and haven’t had any issues. Just be careful not to hit the pot with the beaters too hard.
I also recently got a new hand mixer that has beaters covered in silicone so they’re more gentle on bowls.

Thanks for the reply! Well I went ahead and invested in an Immersion Blender and it has a masher attachment. So now I can mash to my hearts content right in the Instant Pot! Also bought the Immersion Blender to be able to more easily do soups that need to be pureed! LOL

Awesome! That’s how I do it and it was a great investment! Less bowls to wash afterwards. 🙂

Worked out great! My husband loves garlic mashed potatoes so I added several large cloves of garlic and the smell and taste were fantastic.

Ahhhh, you just gave all the judges on Chopped (a Food Network cooking show) a heart attack. They always say to NEVER use the mixer to mash your potatoes….they say it makes them gluey. Personally, I’ve done it many times. I just wanted to let you know in case you see one of them coming. Run! LOL

Lol! They probably don’t have toddlers running around and are rushed making dinner. 😉
