A simple way for your child to practice making good choices while connecting with you:
It’s very important, even when children are little, that they feel like they have a say in their lives. Imagine if someone told you what to do all day, every day… it would probably make you very frustrated! Feeling like we have some control over what happens in our lives helps us to feel empowered — and the same is true for kids. It is important and necessary to have boundaries with our children, but we also need to let them flex their decision-making muscles so that they feel empowered.
One way we do this is by having Kid Day. (Or even Kid Hour!) Kid Day (or Time) is simply a time where they get to call the shots. By putting the power in their hands, kids learn what it’s like to be the decision maker. You might help guide them in picking alternatives if they choose an activity that isn’t possible (a great skill for them to learn!) but otherwise they are in control.
And, this is very important, make sure you are fully present during Kid Day. Be mindful and fully there with your kids enjoying the moment. You might be surprised at how much you learn about your kids during this time.
On this episode Mama Instincts talks about:
- How little say children often have in their own lives and how we would feel if we were in their shoes.
- How and why giving kids some decision-making power helps to empower them and teaches them how to make good choices
- How to practice “Kid Time” with your children
- How to create boundaries with freedom during “Kid Time”
- Why this is a great activity to build a strong bond with your child.
