Earlier this week my 3 year old told me she wanted to make a telescope and I accepted the challenge. I had to get creative and use things we had around the house. I love making crafts like these because I don’t need to have nor buy anything special for it, whatever is available at home works.
This craft ended up being one of our favorites because it was so easy to make and my kid was able to get creative decorating her telescope without needing my help.
I love to see what she creates when she doesn’t need my help!
What you’ll need:
- An empty roll of paper towels or 2 empty rolls of toilet paper
- Packing tape and/or glue
- Construction paper
- Decorating supplies, such as:
- Markers
- Paint
- Craft stickers
- Washi tape
- Frozen confetti – we had these left over from her birthday
- Any other craft decoration supply your kid wants
Instructions:
I didn’t have an empty roll of paper towels so I used 2 rolls of toilet paper. I had to put these 2 pieces together so I used tape and wrapped both rolls in it, not only to keep them together but to make the whole piece stronger.
If you’re using a paper towel roll you can skip this step.
Then my daughter picked the color of the construction paper she wanted and I wrapped it around the toilet paper rolls. To make sure it stays together I put tape on one end of the paper, rolled half of it, then added glue and finished rolling it to make sure it would stay together. We waited a couple of minutes for it to try.
This is where the fun begins. I took out my craft box (pictured below) and told my 3 year old to decorate however she wanted it. The first thing she wanted to use was some washi tape so I placed it right where the construction paper ended, just to reinforce it.
Then she went on to add all sorts of stickers, felt letters, feathers and Frozen confetti. Once she was done we let it dry for about 5 minutes.
The fun part is that your child can decorate however she wants to and you get to take a little break while your child is busy doing it.
After it was done this fun craft provided hours of fun! My 3 year old explored every nook in our home and out the window. She’s actually been playing with it for days and I’m surprised at how well its held.
I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last time we make a telescope and I can’t wait to see how she decorates the next one.
If you make this craft, I would love to see how your kid decorated it. Tag me on instagram (@mamainstincts) so I can see it!

Hi Carolina,
Since you liked the telescope making, you might enjoy making binoculars in a similar way.
