No one ever told me how much I was going to clean when I became a parent. From the moment your baby comes, the excessive cleaning starts. Not only because you want a clean house but because as kids get older, they get so messy!
I have 2.5 and 5 year old girls and my house feels like a war zone. Rice on the floor, books filled with drawings, toys everywhere and spills happen every single day.
My 2 year old is still clumsy and I can’t tell you how often I clean spills. It happens daily and sometimes more than once a day. Not to mention my kitchen counter get so dirty because I’m constantly cooking or preparing snacks.
For a while I was using Babyganics cleaning wipes and they were perfect for this but I felt bad about all the waste, from the wipes to the containers.
I switched to using a homemade all-purpose cleaner and cloth wipes. This worked great but sometimes I just missed the easiness of grabbing a wipe and being able to wipe things clean right away.
One day I decided it was time to make my own reusable cleaning wipes and let me tell you, I couldn’t be happier! These are so easy to make and the best part is that you’re not creating more waste.
You can make these cleaning wipes with all sorts of cloths: you can cut a small towel in pieces, use your baby’s cloth wipes once they’re done with the phase where they need those or you can buy reusable cloth wipes in any store.
I have made different variations of this recipe and so far this is the one I like the best. The base for this recipe is castile soap. Castile soap is a concentrated vegetable soap that is great for all kinds of surfaces and even great for things like this DIY Foaming Hand Soap. Plus, since this recipe doesn’t contain vinegar, it is not harsh, making it safe for granite counter tops. The great thing about these wipes is that they’re reusable. Once you’re done using it, just throw it in your washer.
I make a new batch every week and it takes me about a minute or so to make it.
Lemongrass and Lavender Reusable Cleaning Wipes Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 airtight glass container
- 3 cups of filtered warm water
- 2 Tablespoons castile soap
- 10 Drops of Lemongrass essential oil
- 10 drops of Lavender essential oil
- Reusable cloth wipes
Directions:
Add 2 cups of water to your glass container and then add your castile soap. If you have access to filtered water, then it’s best to use that since most contaminants will have been removed from the water.
Then add the essential oils and mix well.
If you’re using the reusable wipes that are pictured here, then you’ll need to cut them in half. If you’re using your baby’s old burp clothes, they are probably fine the way they are.
Roll each wipe and place it standing up inside your container with the water/castile soap mixture.
Close the lid and shake well. Your wipes are easy to use!
Keep this on your counter and use as needed. Since this recipe uses water but doesn’t use any preservatives, your water mixture will last about a week. If you haven’t used your wipes in a week, it’s best to dump out the water and just make less wipes next time.
Wasn’t that easy? In just a few minutes you have your own reusable wipes and ones that your kids can use too!
