When I realized that most of the common household and body products have toxic ingredients in them I was a little overwhelmed. I started researching and talking to people about it to try and figure out what to do.
I learned in this search that the best way to avoid toxins is making your own products or buying products with a good rating from the Environmental Working Group. Since I had just had a baby, I opted to buy some products and make others. I started out with making products that my husband and I would use. For my baby I kept buying these products while we tested the ones I made.
The easiest and fastest product I learned how to prepare was a foaming hand soap so if you’re looking into making your products this is a good one to start with.
What is foaming hand soap?
It’s really just a different form of liquid hand soap. (it has different ingredients as well) The pump that is used with the soap is what gives it that foamy look. Many parents like to use foam soap because it pumps out in a good amount for the kids to use at home which then helps with less waste on their end.
Can you put regular hand soap in a foaming dispenser?
No, you can’t. This is because liquid hand soap is going to be too thick of a texture to work with this type of dispenser.
Does foaming hand soap need a special dispenser?
Due to the fact that it foams, you will need to be certain that you have a pump on top so that it pumps it out and gives it that foamy texture and look. You can easily order your own special foaming soap dispenser or use one that you have from another soap to repurpose for this recipe. (Just clean it out really well, first!)
Can you refill a foaming soap dispenser?
You can. You just need to make certain that you clean it really well so that when you refill it, there aren’t any clogs or other types of issues.
A few notes for this foaming soap recipe:
The base for the foaming hand wash is Castile Soap. Castile soap is not a brand, but a type of soap. It is a soap that is made with olive oil. Although some people consider that castile soap is a soap made with any vegetable oil such as coconut and hemp oil. Either way, castile soap is known as a type of soap that does not contain animal fats. Prior to my search, I had no idea soap was made using animal fats. Yuck!
If you’re feeling real crunchy, you can make your own castile soap. Find the recipes here or here.
I don’t make my own castile soap so I buy Dr. Bronner’s Organic Rose Castile Liquid Soap as a base. I love this brand because it’s organic, has a great rating with the Environmental Working Group and you can find it in many different scents. Keep in mind that if your baby will be using this soap too you should get the unscented version (this is what we’re currently using now that we have a baby at home) since the essential oils might be too harsh for some babies.
To make this soap you will need a Foaming soap dispenser because it won’t work with a regular one. You can buy a new one or re-use an old dispenser. At first I got this set of 3 because it was cheapest option but now I’ve switched to glass foaming soap dispenser since I want to avoid using plastic.

DIY {Organic} Foaming Castile hand soap
For every 1 part of castile soap, you will need 5 parts of water. This recipe is based on this glass foaming soap dispenser, which holds around 12 ounces of liquid.
Ingredients:
- Foaming Soap Dispenser
- 4 tablespoons of Castile Soap
- Water (it’s best to avoid tap water since it can contain bacteria, use, boiled, distilled water or filtered water)
- 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil
(this is optional but it keeps your hands moisturized and it’s great for skin and nail care)
- 10-20 drops of Essential oil (optional): Use your favorite essential oil only if you’re using an unscented version of castile soap. (Most of Dr. Bronner’s Castile soaps are already scented so you don’t have to add any essential oils if you use that soap.)
- If someone is sick in my home I use Germ Destroyer
(also on Amazon) to help combat those sick germs.
- If I’m using this soap on my baby I don’t add any essential oils.
- If someone is sick in my home I use Germ Destroyer
Directions:
If you’re re-using a foaming soap dispenser make sure you rinse out the container and pump with warm water.
Fill up your dispenser with 3/4 of water. It’s best to add the water first to avoid creating too much foam.
Then add the castile soap and the vitamin E oil. If you are using an unscented version of castile soap, add the essential oils. Now fill up the rest of the container with water, making sure you leave enough room for the pump.
Close the container, shake it gently and it’s ready!
Tip: If you decide to add the Castile soap first then add the water slowly or else you’ll end up with too much foam and not enough room for all the water.
Since this soap doesn’t contain preservatives, it’s best to make it if you plan to start using it right away. We keep soap dispensers in our bathrooms as well as kitchen and each bottle lasts us about a couple of weeks.
How easy was that? Now you have your own non-toxic homemade organic foaming castile hand soap and it only took about 2 minutes to prepare!
