Remember when you were a little kid and got to make crafts or gifts for your parents in kindergarten and school? You were filled with joy to make these gifts and giving them to your love ones felt so fulfilling.
Kids love making crafts and they love giving. Christmas is the perfect time to teach our kids about giving and caring for others.
Kids learn better through action. One way to learn about giving and to celebrate the spirit of Christmas is by making homemade gifts they can give to the people they care about.
This homemade hot cocoa ornament is not only adorable but it is a simple gift for the little ones to put together and one that helps them develop fine motor skills. If you have a toddler, make sure you use a funnel when making this ornament so you don’t end up with hot cocoa everywhere.
This gift is not only for great for family members but also for your friends and co-workers. When we make these ornaments I just set up big batches of the ingredients in bowls and let the kids make as many hot cocoa ornaments as they want. Everyone loves these so you can never have too many!
Homemade Hot Cocoa Christmas Ornament
The ingredients in this recipe make one ornament so if you’re making more than you’ll have to adjust the quantities. An easy way to make it is to put the ingredients in bowls and use a little spoon to fill the ornaments up.
If you don’t have a away to measure the ingredients, just use the picture for reference and eye-ball the quantities.
Remember to use a funnel if you have younger kids so they don’t make a big mess.
Supplies:
- 1 large clear, fillable ornament (I prefer using glass ones but you need to be more careful so stick to plastic if you’re worried about the little ones dropping it)
- 2-3 ounces of hot cocoa
- 1/4 cup candy canes, broken into small pieces
- 1/4 cup milk chocolate chips (the mini ones works best but we’ve also done them with these because they’re tastier)
- 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
Directions:
Add the hot cocoa mix to an empty ornament.
Follow by adding a layer of chocolate chips.
Then add a layer of candy cane.
Finish by adding a layer of mini marshmallows.
Put the ornament top back on and give as a fun gift for the holidays.
To drink: Pour the contents into a big glass of hot milk and enjoy!
