The new school year is just around the corner and many of us are getting ready to send our kids to school. Whether the kids are going for the first time or for the last time there is one thing they all have in common: they need food and most likely, they are getting food sent from home.
When it comes to surfaces that touch food I stick to non-toxic options because I don’t want chemicals leaching into my child’s school lunch.
In this post you’ll be able to find non-toxic and safe products to pack your kid’s school lunch. I’ve divided the post in categories so it’s easier for you to find what you’re looking for.
I didn’t put any glass containers on this list since some schools don’t allow them. However, keep in mind that glass is non-toxic and safe so you can send your kid’s food in glass containers if your school allows it.
Although these products are pricier than plastic containers, they are safer, non-toxic and durable. We’ve been using most of these products on a daily basis since my first kid was a toddler and they still look like new. Plus, not only my kids use them but also my husband when he takes food to work so they are worth the investment for our family.

Drinking:
The first 2 bottles have insulation and the last 2 don’t have insulation.
I wouldn’t get the second bottle for a smaller kid since it has a wide opening and they can easily spill the contents.
Snack/Sandwich bags:
Ice packs:
Lunch/bento boxes:
When it comes to containers that will hold your food there are plenty of non-toxic options. Our favorite brands are Lunchbots, Kids Konserve and ECOlunchbox. These brands carry containers in all sort of shapes and sizes so you’ll be able to find one that fits your needs.
These are the containers we use on a daily basis.

For bigger foods:
Planet box:
This is a very popular option and loved by many moms. I personally have not tried it out yet but I’m hoping to test it out soon.

If you want to make their meals cute, we love these shape cutters or you can find other patterns here.

I wonder why you didnot add PlanetBox which is very popular.

Hi Cindy! I did not add it because I personally haven’t used it and all the items on these list I’ve actually bought and used.
I’d like to see it in person before I add it so I’ll probably add it soon. Thanks for your feedback!

Wow, I didn’t realize there can actually be a lot of designs to choose from when selecting the right lunchbox for your child. You said that while these may be a little more expensive than plastic lunchboxes, they are much safer and more importantly, non-toxic. I’m actually planning to buy my son a new lunchbox for school, and reading your article surely gave me an idea which type of design I will be buying for him. Thanks for sharing this.
