Growing up I loved unicorns. There’s just something so mystical and magical about them…something that makes everyone smile. When you believe in unicorns, you believe in the possibility that anything could happen!
Unicorns are so incredibly popular right now and so many of our friends are having unicorn themed parties (us included). Unicorns are everywhere and it’s no surprise! Kids are drawn to the magical. And really, who couldn’t use a little bit more magic in their life?
As a stay-at-home mom I am always looking for creative activities or art projects that also appealing to my kids’ interests. This craft would be a great one to do with your children, as it should be easy enough for them to do with minimal help. If your child is younger, you may want to assist them with their scissors or simply cut the pieces out for them ahead of time.
And because this is a gift bag, you can also use it as a lesson – to teach your children about giving, being generous, and the power of giving. We love making DIY body products for our friends and family and using these unicorn bags as the gift bags (check out our most popular DIY gifts here).
This Unicorn gift bag is also great for birthday parties. You can either make the bags ahead of time and fill them with goodies or you can turn this into one of the party activities. Have the kids create their own unicorn bags and once they’re done, they can collect their party favors from you.
I like showing the kids how the final product is supposed to look like but I let them get creative. If you’re making this unicorn bag as a craft, then let them make several bags and use their creativity on each bag. They will probably surprise you with a beautiful bag!
DIY Unicorn Gift Bag
Supplies:
- White gift bag
- Black Sharpie
- Glue (or super glue – do not use the super glue if kids are making this craft)
- White foam paper
- Pink foam paper
- Gold Sparkle foam paper
- Paper flower stickers (I also like these flowers and these sparkly ones)
- Tissue Paper (optional)
Instructions:
Cut out a large unicorn horn from your gold sparkle foam paper. When determining the size of your horn, it is better to cut your horn a little on the larger side since it can always be trimmed later.
Next, take your white piece of foam paper and cut out two unicorn ears. I went with a basic upside down U shape but you could also point them slightly at the tips if you prefer.
After you have cut out your white ears, cut the inner ear from your pink foam paper. The pink portion of the ears should be the same shape as the white ears you cut out in the last step but slightly smaller.
With your leftover pink foam paper, cut out two circles for your unicorn cheeks.
Now it’s time to begin assembling your unicorn!
Take your white and pink ear shapes and glue them together to make an ear. Glue the pink inner ear foam piece centered on the white main ear piece.
Glue your gold horn and ears onto your white gift bag. Center your unicorn horn at the top of the bag and glue an ear on either side of the horn.
For this next step, you are going to be gluing your paper flowers onto your gift
bag. You will want to space the flowers out ahead of time to make sure they are nice and even. You could also add some gemstones or other decorations to your unicorn’s flower crown if you’d like a little more sparkle.
Time to draw those eyes! I suggest practicing your prefered eye shape on a blank piece of paper to perfect your technique. You only get one shot on your bag since Sharpies are permanent.
Now it’s time to glue on the cheeks. Place them under your beautiful unicorn eyes about an inch or two.
Now your adorable unicorn gift bag is ready to be stuffed with goodies & tissue paper.
Tip: This is a very fun craft to make as a group or party activity. Set up a table with all the materials and let everyone unicorn gift bags.
How adorable are these unicorn bags?
