There is something about soap when it smells amazing, has flowers and has that homemade look. For a long time I used to buy soap bars at local markets because I was mesmerized by them.
I might have spent a little too much money on soap but there’s something about homemade soap bars… Has that happened to you?
One night I decided I should try to make soap bars and see if I could replicate the lovely smells and beautiful looking bars I love buying. Unfortunately soap making is easy but quite the process and I have 2 small children at home.
I had almost given up on my soap making idea when I came across pour and melt soap bars. Turns out you can buy a soap base that you can customize at home with the flowers, scents and ingredients you want. A pour and melt soap is exactly that, your soap base.
It comes in a big chunk and all you have to do it is cut it up, melt it and then customize it to your needs. It is seriously that simple!
Of course I ordered a several organic melt and pour soaps, silicone molds and started experimenting. I was obsessed from the beginning! The soaps not only came out perfect but they were beautiful, smelled amazing and felt great on my skin.
I started making them for my extended family and friends and they loved it so naturally now I want to share the recipes with you. I have made a few experiments until I came with the exact recipes I wanted to keep recreating and this is one of them. This is will be the first of several recipes.
This oatmeal and lavender soap smells divine but it’s also great for your skin. Oatmeal is one of those ingredients I love to add to DIY recipes because it moisturizes and repairs your skin. Plus it leaves it feeling so soft. I love it so much I even take a weekly oatmeal bath.
Lavender has many benefits: it detoxifies our skin, helps treat acne, excess oil and eczema, prevents wrinkles and aids in skin repair. Both of these ingredients combined make for a soap your skin loves.
For this recipe you can use either a glycerin melt and pour soap base or a goat’s milk melt and pour base. I have used both but I find I prefer the goat milk one.
Keep in mind that to make these soaps you will need a silicone mold. I recommend silicone since it’s really easy to pop out the soaps once they’ve hardened. My favorite molds are these rounds ones, the rectangular ones and these with flower shapes.
If you don’t want to get a mold, you can pour the mixture in a glass tray or bread pan and once it’s hardened cut it up into soap size pieces.
This is such an easy recipe that once you make it, you will never buy regular soap again.
Oatmeal and Lavender {Melt and Pour} Soap Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1lb Glycerine or Goat’s Milk Melt and Pour Soap
- 3/4 cup organic oatmeal oats
- 1 teaspoon of raw organic honey
- 3 tablespoons dried lavender flowers
- 10 drops of lavender essential oil
Directions:
If you purchased the soap I recommend you will only need to use half of it.
Cut one half of the melt and pour soap in squares. This will help the soap melt a lot faster. You can melt it in the microwave in 30 seconds intervals or you can use the double boiler method – this is what I use.
Place the soap cubes in a glass jar, if they don’t all fit at once you can add them once some of the soap has melted. Place the glass jar inside a pot with water and cook on medium/low heat.
While you wait for the soap to melt, set up the silicone molds in a place where they can be left untouched for a few hours. Then put the oats in a food processor and grind them – press the pulse button a few times until they look like like small pieces of oats.
Once the soap has melted, turn off the heat but don’t remove the glass jar yet. Stir in the honey and mix it a few times. Then add the oats and mix well.
Finally, add the lavender flowers and lavender essential oil. Mix well one last time.
Pour the mixture into the silicone molds and let it harden.
I like to make this at night and leave them in the tray all night but if you’re making it during the day, just wait about 2-3 hours before popping them out of the mold.
Now your soap is ready to use. How easy was that?
If you’re going to store some of the soap bars, place them in an airtight glass container. If you’re going to give them away cover them in plastic wrap to keep them clean.
I always make them to give as birthday and Christmas gifts because everyone loves them!
Use them as hand soap and in the shower. Enjoy!
