I love making the products we use at home! I’ve been at this for years now and it is so incredible easy to make the products that it’s become one of my passions.
Why do I make my own products? It’s simple – I want to keep my children and myself away from toxic chemicals (like endocrine disruptors) that are in conventional products. You can buy safer products now but making them only takes a few minutes and you know EXACTLY what’s in each product. Plus you save a lot of money by making the products you use on a daily basis.
Making your own products is so easy that I wrote an entire e-book with 40 DIY recipes. Each of these recipes only takes about 5-10 minutes to make and this non-greasy body butter is one of the recipes you will find in this book. Check it out!
About four years ago I made my first body butter and I love it. It left my skin feeling so moisturized but there was one problem, it was a bit greasy, which meant if I put it on in the morning I would have to walk around naked a few minutes before I could put my clothes on. We don’t always have time to spare in the morning so I started using that butter body only at night while I figured out how I could come up with a less greasy body butter.
I spent countless hours researching and trying to figure out how I could make this butter less greasy but ultimately to do that I would have to make a lotion and use water. The problem with water is that it grows mold/bacteria really fast so if you’re making a water based product you need to use preservatives. I make my own product to avoid preservatives so this wasn’t a solution for me.
Eventually I came up with a moisturizing hand lotion recipe that not only left my hands feeling soft but there wasn’t any greasy residue. I knew I was onto something! I made a bigger batch of that recipe and started using it on my body every morning. I could not believe it! I had finally found the perfect body butter recipe.
This recipe absorbs really fast and doesn’t leave a greasy residue so you can put it on your body and put your clothes right after. The best part, it’s very very easy to make since all you have to do is whip up the ingredients together, no melting or cooking required.
As you can tell, I love this recipe! I love it so much I keep making it in bigger batches and giving it to my friends because it’s so just awesome. So naturally, I now want to share this recipe with you and I hope you love it as much as we do.
Non-Greasy and Fast-Absorbing DIY Body Butter Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons Organic Shea Butter
- 4 teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel
- 4 teaspoons Grapeseed Oil
- 2 teaspoons Vitamin E Oil
- 4 teaspoons Organic Arrowroot Powder (if you suffer from really dry skin use half the amount)
- Essential Oils: you can add essential oils to give this lotion a nice scent of your preference. If you’re going to be using this lotion while you’re out, under the sun, I don’t recommend using any of the citrus essential oils. My favorite scents for body butter are:

Directions:
Put the shea butter into a bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix the shea butter for a few minutes until it becomes fluffy. Then, add the grapeseed oil and vitamin E oil. Mix the ingredients for a few minutes until all the ingredients are mixed well.
Add the arrowroot powder a little at a time and mix in, using the hand mixer, until the cream is no longer grainy. Then, add the Aloe Vera gel. Mix it a bit more until it feels like a fluffy, soft lotion.
If you prefer for your lotion to have a scent, add your preferred essential oil, mixing in as many drops as you’d like to reach the desired scent level. I usually add about 20-40 drops depending on scent. If you’re going to be using this lotion while you’re out under the sun, I don’t recommend using any of the citrus essential oils.
Store your body butter in an airtight glass container. I usually keep one batch in my bathroom and the rest of the body butter in the fridge since it feels so good to apply cold on hot days.
This is the perfect body butter to apply in the morning, since it absorbs faster than our regular body butter, but you can also use it at night. It’s also safe to use on your kids.

You have no idea how happy I was to find this receipe! I’ve been making body butter since November (I gave it away as gifts!). However, mine was always toooooooo greasy. A lot of folks really liked it, but I was looking for something a little less greasy, and now I’ve found it!!!!! I’m so excited. Thanks so much for coming up with this receipe and I know I’ll use it a great deal.
Carolina says
That makes me so happy! I totally understand what you mean about it being greasy – that’s exactly why I experimented for a while until I came up with this.
Hope you and your friends love it!

hi thanks for this receipe. Does it get hard after it has sat in the jar for a while?
Carolina says
Yes it does. It will look exactly like it does in the picture once it’s hardened.

Have you made this recipe by weight? as in the ingredients in grams? If so what would the measurements be?
Carolina says
I have not, sorry!
kJ Johnson says
Will it grow mold? Aloe Vera gel is water based.
Carolina says
Anything without preservatives will eventually grow mold. I have had this for 2 months before I ran out and it didn’t grow mold. The aloe Vera I linked to already has some preservatives, which helps.
However I would make this to start using it right away and not to store it for later.

Thank you for this awesome recipe. I tried making this and I feel like the body butter is still greasy. Is it ok to add double the amount of arrowroot powder?
Thank you.
Carolina says
Yes, but too much arrowroot could dry your skin. I would first use less, make sure you rub it in and if it’s still too greasy for you I would add a little bit of arrowroot at a time – 1/4 more, 1/2 more, etc.
Veronica LaTourette says
You could melt a teaspoon of Organic Beeswax pellets and add it to it. But you have to make sure the butter is a little soft at room temp as well as the wax and remix it. Good Luck
Grace says
Have you tried it without the aloe Vera gel? I rather not use it since it does have preservatives and it is not organic.
Carolina says
No, I haven’t used it without the aloe vera…but this is one of the purest aloe vera you can get.
If you don’t want to use it, I recommend you make my body butter recipe instead: https://mamainstincts.com/diy-organic-body-butter/

Hi! I really like the idea of this recipe but was wondering what I could use in place of the grapeseed oil as I have used it before and found i was not a fan of it. Also, I do not have vitamin e oil but I do have rose hip seed oil, could I use that in place of the vitamin e? I’m allergic to coconuts so finding recipes for good home made skin care is really hard ?. Thanks in advance!
Carolina says
Melissa you can replace it for any nourishing oil, like olive oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil and yes, you can use rosehip oil instead of the vitamin E. Hope that helps!
Carolina says
Rosehip oil works great so you can use that instead of the vitamin E and the grapeseed oil.
Also you can swap out the grapeseed oil with any other nourishing oil you like, such as olive oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil, etc.
Carolina says
One more thing, since you’re allergic to coconut, you can almost always swap out the coconut oil in a recipe for any other nourishing oil. You might have to add a tad more of beeswax if the recipe calls for it.
Anita says
I can’t find arrowroot powder where I am can cornstarch or tapioca powder be substituted instead? Thank you.
Carolina says
Yes, you can use cornstarch.
Cindy says
Wish I found your recipe instead of the one I just made! Any ideas on what I can add to the recipe I have to cut down on the greasiness? It has:
Coconut oil
Shea butter
Jojoba oil
Arrowroot
Lavender oil
Hate to toss mine and be wasteful. I’ll be trying yours next!
Carolina says
Hi Cindy! Unfortunately your comment landed in my spam for some reason and I’m just seeing it now. So sorry!
Did you figure out what to do or do you still need help? 🙂
Penny says
Thank you for sharing. Just made some and love the consistency. Only added 2 tsp of arrowroot powder. It feels nice and thick and lucious x
Carolina says
I am so happy you like it! 🙂
Katya says
I am planning on making this in the next few days. I assume you have to melt the Shea butter before mixing it?
Carolina says
Not for this recipe, I just whip it.
Katya says
Turned out perfect! I have been looking for a good body butter to use on my terrible winter skin. Thank you =)
