If your kids are anything like mine, they love play dough – and I love that they love it! Play dough is fantastic for kids because it prompts their imagination and imaginative play. They can make literally anything! It’s wonderful for inspiring creativity.
Plus, it’s great for working those fine motor skills. Playing with play dough helps strengthen little hands as they squish and squash and roll. This in turns helps children hold a pencil, scissors, and other tools. Play dough manipulation can also help with hand-eye coordination.
However, store-bought play dough has a strong chemical smells that I don’t care for and I was concerned about my daughters playing with it because toddlers and little kids put everything in their mouths. Literally, everything. I definitely didn’t want them eating conventional play dough.
Making your own play dough is actually very easy and extremely affordable! I like making my own play dough for peace of mind. We have been making our natural play dough recipe for a long time but I thought it would be fun to try and make it taste safe. I don’t need to worry about one of my daughters eating this dough because it’s actually completely edible. And it keeps them entertained for ages!
Another great things about making your own play dough is that your children can actually help you make it. My kids love helping in the kitchen and are always so proud of the outcome when they help me make something. Making this edible play dough together will give you some fun bonding time and then mommy can take a little break while the kids have fun playing with their new dough!
Taste-Safe Cake Mix Play Dough
Materials:
- 1 box organic white cake mix
- ½ cup of organic avocado oil or melted coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons organic cornstarch
- 5 tablespoons organic powdered sugar
- Natural sprinkles (optional)
Instructions:
In a mixer, combine the cake mix and ½ cup oil. Use a bread hook attachment if you have it available. You can also mix this by hand if you don’t have a mixer.
Then, add 3 tablespoons of cornstarch into your dough.
Time to add the powdered sugar. Slowly add in 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar a little at a time. Depending on your cake mix, you may need to add additional powdered sugar at this point. Continue to add more powdered sugar 1 tablespoon at a time until your play dough is a consistency that you like.
If you would like to add a little bit of color, add some sprinkles to your cake mix play dough. My girls love it with sprinkles!
Cake mix play dough can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. But odds are it won’t last that long!
Set up the play dough on a table, and let your child get creative! If you have play dough tools and cutter use those to make it more fun or give you child measuring spoon and cookie cutter so they can make fun shapes.
