Spring time is almost here which means it’s the perfect time to get cleaning!
Let’s face it, no one likes to clean, with the exception of my mother-in-law – she loves to clean! Spring time is great for cleaning because we can get rid of those winter clothes we won’t need next season and we can go through our summer clothes and make sure we just keep what we want to wear.
It’s also the perfect time to clear out pantries and closets and get rid of things that have been sitting there for a while.
The only problem with cleaning is that a lot of conventional cleaning products contain endocrine disruptors. These chemicals can interfere with the hormones in your body, causing all sorts of health issues. To learn more about endocrine disruptors read this post.
There are two ways to clean your house with products that are non-toxic:
- Research products and make sure you’re buying truly non-toxic products.
- Make your own with ingredients that have been around for a long time and are not linked with health issues.
If you’re reading this post it’s probably because you watched my latest segment on Great Day Washington and would like to try to make your own products. Making these DIY cleaners is so easy and you’re going to love these recipes!

DIY Scented Spray
There’s something about a house that smells nice that makes everyone happy. Making scented sprays is as simple as mixing vodka and water with your favorite essential oil.
All you need to do is mix 1/2 tablespoon of vodka with the essential oil of your choice (we prefer the essential oils blends from NOW Foods) in a 2 ounce glass spray bottle. Add 3 tablespoons of water, shake and spray as needed.
We love using these sprays in our bathroom and also to keep our living room smelling nice.

What if you don’t have time to make DIY products?
Sometimes we’re too busy or we don’t have time to make DIY products and that’s okay. When this happens you should get non-toxic products to clean your home.
My favorite one is Force of Nature, you can learn more about it here. This has come to replace all of our cleaners and works just like bleach, but without all the bad stuff that comes with bleach.
You can also check out the cleaning guide from the Environmental Working Group. They use a rating scale to tell you if a product is toxic or not. All you have to do is type the name of the product you’re using or want to buy and you’ll know if it’s a good choice for your home. Or, you can shop my favorite non-toxic products here.
Living a non-toxic lifestyle is all about minimizing exposure and one of the best ways to do this is to keep your home free of toxins (as much as possible). Our home is where we spend a big chunk of our days and if we keep it toxic-free our bodies will be able to recharge at night and clear themselves out from whatever else we were exposed throughout the day.
It is especially important to keep our home as toxin-free as possible if you have little ones, as their bodies are not equipped to handle a high toxic load. By switching to safe cleaners and buying as much organic food as possible you’re giving your little ones a great start in life.
