It’s time to give your baby’s bottom an organic baby bottom soothing cream that you can easily make at home. If you can prevent baby diaper rash, you’d do so, right?! This is great for sensitive skin as well.
If you have a baby, an ointment for diaper rashes is something you need to keep in your home. You want to have available before your baby’s bum gets red because you never know when you’re going to need it.
Unfortunately, all babies develop a rash sooner or later. There are many great products out there to treat diaper rashes. In the past, I’ve bought the Earth Mama Angel Baby and Motherlove ones and had great results.
Don’t forget to check out our DIY Organic Baby Lotion as well.
After using those products for a while I started experimenting with my own DIY recipe to create a product that would soothe my baby’s bum.
We have been using this recipe for years and on 2 different kids. I’m very pleased with how fast it soothes their little bottoms. The best part is that all these ingredients can be used on other homemade recipes.
If you don’t like rubbing in lotion on your baby’s bottom, you might like our baby bottom soothing spray, which is also safe for cloth diapers. Plus it’s also great for bruises, so a must-have in your home.
This DIY recipe lasts for months and the best part is that all the ingredients are non-toxic and safe for babies, so you don’t have to worry about questionable chemicals on your baby’s delicate skin.
What can I use instead of diaper cream?
I’m not one for using anything store-bought when it comes to creams for babies. This is why I’ve created our own diaper rash cream that really has worked well for our children.
Being able to make your own diaper rash cream can alleviate the worry of added chemicals, etc.
Is Vaseline good for diaper rash?
While my baby bottom soothing diaper rash recipe doesn’t have vaseline in it, I know that a lot of homemade diaper rash recipes do. This is because the use of Vasoline on diaper rash is a easy way to keep the diaper away from the rash to limit irritation.
How do you treat a raw baby bottom?
Changing diapers frequently and apply this diaper cream recipe is a great way to help treat their raw baby bottom. Some people even let their baby go diaperless for a time to allow the air to get to their bottom and keep away the chance of any type of moisture, etc. (of course this is done at home and in an area where if they pottied it wouldn’t make a mess such as on a washable blanket or diaper pad)

DIY {Organic} Baby Bottom Soothing Cream
This recipe takes only 5 minutes to make and about 10-15 minutes to harden. If you’re going to be using this at the beach or someplace that’s really warm, use 2 tablespoons of beeswax instead of one. This is one of my favorite diaper rash ointment recipes.
Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons Raw Unrefined Organic Shea Butter
- 2 tablespoons Organic Coconut Oil
- 1 tablespoon Organic Beeswax Pastilles (use 2 tablespoons if you’re home gets really warm)
- 1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
- 1 tablespoon Arrowroot Flour (optional)
- 3-5 drops of essential oil (optional)
- Roman Chamomile: this is my go-to for this recipe since it smells lovely and helps to heal skin.
- Lavender: also has healing properties and it’s soothing for baby.
- Tea Tree Oil: use this if you’re dealing with yeast or bacteria.
- A jar to store it in: I like the 4 ounce jar and this one to carry in my diaper bag.
Directions:
You will need to make this using the double boiler method.
Inside a glass jar put the shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax.
Put some water inside a pot and set to medium heat. Add it to middle of the pot and wait for the ingredients to melt.
Stir it occasionally.
Once it’s all melted, add the arrowroot and vitamin E oil. Mix it a few times and then add the essential oils, if you’re using any. It should look like this once you’ve mixed in all the ingredients.
Transfer it to the glass jar where you plan to store it and wait for it to cool.
You can use it once it’s cooled off however if you want to give it a fluffy consistency it’s best to whip it. Once the ointment has hardened mix it with your mixer for a few minutes. Once you’re done whipping it all store it in a small glass jar.
The cream will work regardless if you whip it or not.
That’s it! Fast and easy to make and very effective in getting rid of those rashes.
Remember that a little goes a long way. I usually grab a little bit of the cream with a finger and that’s what I use on my baby. Make sure you use enough to cover the entire bum area.
Tip: if you want to carry some in your diaper bag, add some of the mixes to this small jar:

hi, i just want to know if I can change vitamin e oil to almond oil?
Carolina says
You don’t have to use it at all but you could add the almond oil and it would work too.
Karina says
Hi mamainstincts I don’t know why but I was to the beach and the cream goes liquid, I think was the highest temperature, what can I do to fix it?
Carolina says
Hi Karina! I’ve taken it to the beach and didn’t have this problem but it must have been really hot where you went. Did you use the arrowroot powder? That will probably help but if the temperature is excessively hot I am afraid there’s not much you can do. You can still use it and it won’t affect the properties. 🙂

I live in Costa Rica, and it’s impossible to find this product, maybe that’s the reason, what can I use to replace the arrowroot?
Carolina says
If you don’t live in a hot area i would just leave it as is (without the arrowroot) but if it’s melting you can add cornstarch instead (maicena) and see if that helps.
Karina says
Thank you I would let you know if it works

Can I use cocoa butter instead of coconut oil? We have coconut allergies.
Carolina says
Yes! I would do use cocoa instead of Shea and just skip the coconut oil or use another nourishing oil like olive oil, grapeseed oil or safflower oil.

Hi, It’s unclear if this is also cloth-diaper friendly or if it’s only the spray thag can be used with cloth diapers. Is it okay to use this recipe when using cloth diapers? thanks!
Carolina says
Hello Una, I have mostly used the spray in cloth diapers and would stick to that. The times I used the Soothing cream on cloth diapers is when I was also using a liner. Hope that helps!

Hi! I’ve been using Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm for years and love it. I’d like to try making my own at home. I was wondering, how much of each essential oil do you use? Do you use all of them at once and how much of each do you add? Thank you!
Carolina says
Hi! If you want to add essential oils just follow the recipe. I add 3-5 drops per batch.
