Who doesn’t love ice cream? There’s something about a sweet frozen treat that just makes your tastes buds have a dance party in your mouth! Am I right? ? ?
Unfortunately, store-bought ice cream tends to have a lot of sugar and some even have ingredients that are not so healthy for you so that’s why we started experimenting with making our own frozen treats in my home, made with healthy ingredients.
This healthy fruit ice cream recipe tastes just like a sorbet ice cream! It’s actually so good that the first few times my kids and I made it, my husband thought he was eating store bought ice cream. It wasn’t until he saw us making it that he believed me that we actually made this with just fruit, water and our food processor.
The great thing about using fruit is that it’s already sweet so you don’t even need to add extra sweeteners!
You can make frozen fruit ice cream with pretty much any fruit, but I have found that to have the right creamy consistency you need to use at least half of a frozen banana. Anywhere from 1/2 to a whole frozen banana will do the trick so you end up with a ice cream like consistency.
The best part is that you don’t need that much fruit; all you need are 2 cups of fruit! It might sound like a lot but once you dice the fruit you’ll realize it’s not a lot. This is also a great way to avoid throwing out fruit that’s about to spoil.
If you notice a fruit is too ripe, dice it, put it in a glass container and store it in your freezer for the next time you want to make this frozen fruit treat. If your kids leave left over fruit pieces, freeze them too. Making this fruit ice cream is a great way to avoid any fruit waste!

Costco also sells a lot of organic frozen fruit that you can use to make this ice cream recipe. We love buying their organic tropical fruit mix – it comes with mangoes, strawberries, pineapple and bananas. The fruit even comes diced and in individual pouches so we just use one pouch each time we make the ice cream. The pouch is about 2 cups of frozen fruit so it works great.
You can make any combinations of fruit you like! Remember you should use a 1/2 – 1 banana and them mix it with fruits like these:
- All types of berries
- Pineapple
- Mangoes
- Peach
