It’s winter! It’s cold out, maybe snowing again, and you have kiddos that need entertaining – it’s the perfect time for a fun craft that you can all enjoy while staying inside where it is warm and cozy.
We all like to get our kids outside when the weather is nice but during winter, it can be a little bit more challenging. Even when you can get outside for some playtime (which is just as important in the winter as in the summer!), you usually can’t stay out as long as you would in the spring or summer due to the weather. But we still need to entertain the kids and that’s why sensory play activities are perfect during the winter months.
My kids love sensory play activities – most kids do! And one of their favorite things to make is slime because it’s simple to make and so fun to play with. This Sparkly Snowball Slime is the perfect activity for this time of year!
Playing with slime lets kids experience different textures and helps to develop their fine motor skills. Sensory activities are a great way for kids to explore the world around them using the 5 senses. The best thing about making your own sensory activities is that you can also engage your kids into helping you to make them as well as allowing them to then play with them. It’s almost like two activities in one.
Making your own slime means that you get to control all of the ingredients that go into your slime. This is so important when you’re looking at something like slime that is going to be all over your kids’ hands. This recipe is perfect for older kids who know not to eat slime. However, if you’re making slime for a toddler or a little kid that might want to taste the slime, I invite you to make this taste-safe slime instead.
Sparkly Snowball Slime
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white school glue
- ½ cup liquid starch
- 10 drops bergamot essential oil
- 10 drops frankincense essential oil
- ¼ cup artificial snow
- 1 tablespoon white mica powder (optional)
- ¼ cup white glitter
Note: the essential oils are optional and can be switched to the scent of your preference.
Instructions:
Measure one cup of the white school glue into a large bowl.
Add the mica powder (this is optional) and stir.
Once the mica is spread throughout the glue, add the essential oils and continue to combine everything together.
Add the liquid starch to the bowl and mix well. When the mixture begins to come away from the bowl, it is ready to take out.
Pick up the mixture and remove it from the bowl. Knead it on a flat surface and work it with your hands until the consistency is smooth and you have achieved a good texture. (it is usually best for an adult to tackle this step until the slime becomes less sticky.)
Now add the glitter and the artificial snow to the mixture and continue kneading until both are spread evenly through the slime.
Now your slime is ready to be played with! Your kids are sure to love it!
