The first 4 years of my parenting journey I barely made any time for myself, and if someone would have told me that meditation would make me a better parent I would have laughed. I would have laughed because finding time to meditate when you have kids sounded like an imposible task to me.
That is until I crashed and burned and realized I had to do something to change my life. I discovered meditation is not something you can only do alone, in a quiet room, with the right incense and when everything has aligned for you. Meditation means to look within, to be aware of yourself, to quiet down your mind and be in stillness, live in the true present moment…and we can accomplish this while being with our kids. In fact, just trying to quiet down your mind makes a world of difference because by simply trying you are already bringing yourself into awareness and focusing on this task.
Meditation can happen while you’re on-the-go, while you’re cooking or cleaning, running, going out for a walk or playing at home with your kids. And learning how to quiet down your mind when life is full on is one of the best skills you can master. It will allow you to stay calm when your children are upset, it will allow you to stop an argument before you say things you might regret, it will allow you to choose happiness over conflict and it will make you feel better about yourself and about your life because you will be in tune with yourself.
On this podcast episode I talk how to quiet your mind while you’re active doing stuff, like working or taking care of your children. This skill has changed my life and I am sure it will change yours if you practice it consistently.
Before listening to this podcast, make sure you listen to episode 9, which is the first part of this 2 part episode. On episode 9 I talked about how working on ourselves makes us better parents and on this episode I share with you simple ways to incorporate mindfulness in your life.
